…It, along with Nick Benavides’ wonderfully structured and harmonically imaginative setting of e.e. cummings i thank you God for most this amazing day, were the most arresting pieces of the evening… The judge’s tastes were well aligned with mine.
– Review of i thank You God for most this amazing day as performed by the International Orange Chorale in Music vs Theater by Brian Rosen: http://musicvstheater.com/2014/05/16/sfcmchoralcompetition/
A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to have a killer performance by the International Orange Chorale. I’ve loved them for years (since I moved to SF.) It’s one of my favorite pieces I’ve written, and one of my favorite performances of the year.
Ninth Biennial Composition Competition
“i thank you God for this most beautiful day”
Nick Benavides, composer – 1st Prize Winner
Text by: e. e. cummings
i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping, greenly spirits of trees,
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any – lifted from the no
of all nothing – human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
Sung by: International Chorale of San Francisco
